A Honda Pilot with over 300,000 miles came into the shop. I can’t remember if it’s the highest mileage I’ve personally seen, but it had to be near the most if it wasn’t. As expected, it had many things wrong with it, but even though it really wasn’t worth keeping this vehicle, the customer decided they did want the timing belt replaced, when a full timing belt job at a dealer costs more than any car with 300,000 miles is worth. As I should’ve expected, I had a few more problems doing the job than usual, just because of how old it was.

Sometimes while checking over a car, I find that someone in the past didn’t do a good job on something. If it was just somebody doing work in their driveway I could excuse it as lack of knowledge, but if it was a professional mechanic, they are not somebody I would take my car to.

A 2001 Honda Odyssey was brought into the shop with two problems to diagnose that you might not think would be related. The battery kept going dead, and the left sliding door wouldn’t open. I decided to focus on just the battery issue first.

If you’re somewhere with a lot trees, you sometimes need to be careful where you park your car. You might think that the only danger a tree could pose to your car would be a falling branch, but that it usually only happens during a storm. I was doing a brake job at a friend’s apartment, and had set the car up on jack stands under a tree, because it was out of the way of the other cars parked there, and found out it wasn’t a safe spot.
