Most customers that come into the shop to get a problem diagnosed don’t know what the actual problem is, just the symptoms. Sometimes people come in and tell us what they think the problem is, but they might not be correct. This was one time a car came in and the information they gave us was correct.

At first glance it looked like a pretty typical repair order: scraping noise from the rear of a Honda Accord. Most likely going to be rear brakes, with a good chance of needing calipers as well due to the parking brake design. But when I checked the service history, the brakes had been done very recently.

Original equipment wheels that come on a car are designed so that they fit snugly around the center of the wheel hub. This is important because that takes the load off of the studs, so they’re not what’s holding all the weight and forces of the car. Aftermarket wheels are designed to be able to fit multiple vehicles, which may have different sizes of hubs.

A customer brought their Honda Accord to the dealer because there was a little clunking noise from the brakes or suspension. It didn’t take me long to figure out what the problem was once I got the wheels off.
