The exhaust system on my truck was badly rusting out, so I finally got around to replacing it. When I removed the muffler, it started falling apart even more than it already had, giving a good view at what the inside of a basic muffler looks like.
The main way that the muffler decreases the volume of the exhaust is by not letting it flow in a straight line. It enters through one pipe but exits out a different one, and can only get between them by going through the holes in the pipes and moving around in the empty cylinder. Obviously in this rusted out condition it didn’t do a very good job of muffling.
