Compared to even ten years ago, more and more cars are coming with bigger and bigger wheels, meaning thinner tire profiles. That means more potential for wheel damage from potholes and curbs.
Most low profile tires I’ve seen have a “rim protector”, which is just a raised ridge of rubber that’s supposed to protect the wheels from damage when you hit a curb. In this case it didn’t really work, because a chunk got taken out of the rim protector and the wheel still got damaged.
