Quick Drive: 1983 Mazda RX-7

One of my coworkers recently purchased a 1983 Mazda RX-7, and he recently let me take it for a spin after work. Before this, the oldest vehicle I’d driven was a 1985 Chevy S-10, and I’d never driven anything with a rotary engine, so this was a first for me in a couple areas.

Overall it’s a fun little car. It has roughly the same horsepower and weight as my ’97 Honda Civic, but it’s a more fun package. Revving all the way up to 7,000 RPM before shifting was pretty cool, it didn’t feel like it was straining at all.

Although it was a fun drive, I’m a bit too tall for it. My head was touching the roof, although the sunroof gave me a little bit more room. If I fit in it I would consider one for a second car, but I’ll have to go with something a little roomier.
