Last week I wrote about the trouble I had trying to do some rear suspension work on my ’97 Civic. One of the things I discovered was that only one of the two gas tank straps was holding it up.
I don’t know how long it was like this, and I really don’t want to know. If the other had failed, it probably wouldn’t have been good. Might have gotten pretty hot.
This is all that was left of the strap that was still holding the tank up. I could easily bend it with my hands because it was so rusty.
I got new straps, as well as new mounting hardware, because the old parts were now a single piece of rust.
Once I got the new straps in, I sprayed them with black spray paint to help keep them from rusting a little bit. I was going to use undercoating spray but forgot to bring it and I had to put the plastic shield back over everything.
