Scraping Noise From Brakes…Caused by Washers?

At first glance it looked like a pretty typical repair order: scraping noise from the rear of a Honda Accord. Most likely going to be rear brakes, with a good chance of needing calipers as well due to the parking brake design. But when I checked the service history, the brakes had been done very recently.

Don’t Forget the Center Ring

Original equipment wheels that come on a car are designed so that they fit snugly around the center of the wheel hub. This is important because that takes the load off of the studs, so they’re not what’s holding all the weight and forces of the car. Aftermarket wheels are designed to be able to fit multiple vehicles, which may have different sizes of hubs.

A customer brought their Honda Accord to the dealer because there was a little clunking noise from the brakes or suspension. It didn’t take me long to figure out what the problem was once I got the wheels off.

Parts Just Wear Out Sometimes

A Honda Pilot with over 300,000 miles came into the shop. I can’t remember if it’s the highest mileage I’ve personally seen, but it had to be near the most if it wasn’t. As expected, it had many things wrong with it, but even though it really wasn’t worth keeping this vehicle, the customer decided they did want the timing belt replaced, when a full timing belt job at a dealer costs more than any car with 300,000 miles is worth. As I should’ve expected, I had a few more problems doing the job than usual, just because of how old it was.
