I was looking through my picture archive, and somehow I’ve never posted this from over a year ago.
Somehow the nut on this front axle shaft had gotten cross-threaded, and removing it completely stripped all the threads from the end of the axle. Whether the nut got cross-threaded as it went on or if something else happened, I’m not sure. It’s hard enough to tighten a small bolt that’s been cross-threaded, and this is about an inch in diameter, so that would be extremely hard to tighten cross-threaded the entire way.
To get the nut off, the tech that was working on this car had to cut into the end of the axle and nut with a cut-off wheel until the nut was able to flex enough to release and come off.
